Abstract

Efforts to care for children's health are aimed at preparing future generations who are healthy, intelligent and of good quality and to reduce of child mortality. Tetanus neonatorum and umbilical cord infection are the causes of morbidity and mortality continuously in various countries. Every year 500,000 babies die from tetanus neonatorum, and 460,000 die from bacterial infections. One of the infections that often occurs in newborns is caused by a problematic umbilical cord. Umbilical cord care for newborns that occurs in the field is still diverse. Umbilical cord care for newborns that occurs in the field is still diverse. Care of the umbilical cord that is good and right is influenced by various factors including the mother's knowledge and attitude about umbilical cord care. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge and attitudes of post partum mothers towards open umbilical cord care in the working area of the Tebing Health Center. This research is quantitative by using a cross sectional approach. The study population was post partum mothers in the working area of the Tebing Health Center in February 2023. Sampling using purposive sampling obtained 38 respondents as samples. The results showed that 16 respondents (42.1%) who had good knowledge performed open umbilical cord care in a good category, then respondents who had a positive/supportive attitude as many as 18 respondents (47.3%) also performed open cord care in a good category. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between knowledge and open cord care with a p-value of 0.001 α 0.05 and there is a significant relationship between mother's attitude and open umbilical cord care with a p value of 0.000 0.05. It is hoped that health workers will educate them by practicing open cord care techniques to increase the knowledge and attitudes of post partum mothers in caring for the umbilical cord.
